Livelli elevati di omocisteina (iperomocisteinemia) rappresentano un serio problema per la salute, in quanto sono stati collegati a numerose patologie, in particolare a malattie cardiovascolari, ictus e malattie neurodegenerative come il morbo di Alzheimer.
